Greece U19 fall in Euro 2018 qualifying opener
UEFA U19 EURO 2018 QUALIFYING - QUALIFYING ROUND
|Romania U19||2 - 1||Greece U19|
The Greek U19 national team fell 1-2 to Romania in their first qualifier for UEFA EURO 2018.
The result leaves Greece in a difficult position in the group as only the top two teams advance to the next stage of qualifying. The result sees Greece sit bottom of the group along with Gibraltar (lost 6-0 to Russia) while Romania and Russia sit atop the group with three points.
Greece managed to get on the board first with Douvikas in the 24th minute, however Morutan equalized for the Romanians just before the halftime (39). The two teams went into the break level at 1-1.
Romania started off as the better side in the second half and Sintean came close to giving his side the lead in the 63rd minute when his shot was denied by the crossbar. The Romanian striker, however, managed to find the back of the net two minutes later to give Romania the decisive lead. Emmanouilidis came close to scoring in second half stoppage time to salvage a point for the Ethniki Neon, but Romania held on for the all-important victory.
Greece will matchup against Gibraltar on Saturday where the three points are expected before their final group fixture against Russia, in what could be a do-or-die matchup for a place in the next qualifying round.
