Greece U20 crowned World Champions in water polo
The Greek U20 national water polo team defeated 5-4 Croatia in penalties (7-7 in regulation) to win gold at the World Championships in Belgrade.
After Greece’s triumph against the hosts in the semi-finals, Greece matched up against Croatia in Sunday’s U20 water polo World Championships Final. The Croatians took control of the match early on and increased their lead to as many as three goals (5-2) at the beginning of the third quarter.
Although all seemed to be lost for the Greek team, the Ethniki Neon overturned the deficit and managed to take a 7-6 lead late in the fourth quarter. However, with only seconds remaining before the end of regulation, Croatia sent the game into penalties with a dramatic equalizer.
In penalties, the Greek team kept their cool scoring all five of their attempts while Croatia saw their second shot hit the post and go out. The Galanofleki prevailed 5-4 in the shootout to be crowned the new World Champions in U20 Water Polo and proved once again why Greece is considered a world powerhouse in the sport.
