In the group stage, Greece managed to beat Slovenia (90-79) and Poland (88-46) while dropping one overtime defeat to Lithuania (86-88), in turn finishing in second place of Group D. The Greeks were regarded as favourites for the Round of 16 tie against the Germans, but it turned out to be a miserable encounter as the team conceded a heavy 54-82 loss.
Greece will now play in the classification games (9th-16th place). The match against Serbia, who suffered a shock defeat against Great Britain, will take place on Thursday at 16:00 in Israel.
Giorgos Kalaitzakis of Panathinaikos was the only Greek player to reach double figures in terms of points (15).
Greece never recovered from a simply disastrous first quarter. Completely off the pace, the Greeks scored a mere six points in the opening 10 minutes, while Germany registered 23 to put themselves in a fantastic position.
In the second, Greece outscored Germany 20-17, but it wasn’t enough to gain any serious momentum.
Matters worsened in the second half. Germany won the third frame 23-13, and in the fourth, they calmly saw out proceedings to win the period 19-15 and the match 82-54.
