The Greek U20 national basketball team came away with a narrow 56-49 victory over Montenegro in the Round of 16 of the FIBA Europe U20 championships. Next up for Greece is Lithuania in the quarterfinals.
A below par display on the offensive end almost proved costly to Greece’s U20 national basketball team as they prevailed with a 56-49 victory over Montenegro in the FIBA Europe U20 championships. Greece took an early lead, which they never lost, but a 7-minute dry spell in the fourth quarter (Greece scored one point) allowed Montenegro to come within one point at 49-48 with three minutes remaining.
Charalampopoulos and Koniaris came through with important points to re-give Greece a five point lead. The Greek defense stood firm in the final two minutes of the game and the Galanolefki celebrated a 56-49 victory and a place in the quarterfinals.
Charalampopoulos led the Ethniki with 14 points and 8 rebounds while Koniaris added 11 points. Greece struggled from the field going 20/56.
Next up for Greece will be Lithuania in the quarterfinals scheduled for Thursday.
