OFI’s thrilling win over Platanias in Wednesday’s Super League promotion/relegation playoff concluded the domestic league season in Greece for 2018/19. The team from Heraklion maintained their place in the Super League while Platanias will compete in the second division, the Super League 2, for a second consecutive season.
With the restructuring of Greece’s football leagues, 40 teams will compete across three professional divisions named the Super League (first tier), Super League 2 (second tier), and Football League (third tier). Fourteen teams will make up the Super League and Football League while the Super League 2 will consist of 12 teams.
There have been talks about increasing the Super League 2 to 14 teams, however nothing has been confirmed or rejected just yet. If the Super League 2 does increase to 14 teams, this year’s 11th and 12th placed teams from the Football League, Iraklis and Trikala, will likely fill the two-team void in the second division. Iraklis have released a statement requesting their participation in the Super League 2 as they feel their participation in next year’s Football League, the new third tier, is an unjust outcome.
