Greeks Abroad Review: Cholevas and Vellios register important goals

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In England, left-back Jose Cholevas scored his third of the 2018/2019 Premier League campaign, unleashing a wonderful shot from the edge of the penalty area which struck gold in the 3:2 victory against Cardiff City. On Sunday, Greek striker Apostolos Vellios then grabbed the second in a 2:0 win for Waasland-Beveren against Antwerp, finding the net just four minutes after entering the game as a substitute. The 26-year old now has four goals in 13 Jupiler League appearances.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn) and Stergos Marinos (Charleroi) made assists, goalkeepers Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica) and Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia) registered clean sheets for their respective clubs, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ absence was Arsenal’s downfall at Southampton.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players and/or those playing in high profile leagues):

Konstantinos Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Marseille’s scheduled match against Bordeaux was postponed.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Missed the match against Southampton with Arsenal conceding a surprise 2:3 defeat on the road.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): The young Greek centre-back is still on the sidelines and didn’t play in the loss to Southampton.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Scored the second goal in a 3:2 win against Cardiff City with a wonderful long range strike. Played 90 minutes.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Didn’t feature in the 0:0 draw against Derby County.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): The defender is out until 2019 and couldn’t participate in the 1:2 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Did not play in the 1:1 draw with Schalke 04 at home.

Anastasios Donis (VfB Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Emerged as a substitute at half time and earned a yellow card in the 2:1 home win against Hertha Berlin.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): The former international goalkeeper is still on the sidelines with an injury. Werder lost 1:2 to leaders Borussia Dortmund.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga): Didn’t play any part in the 2:1 victory over Duisburg in the second tier of German football.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Played 90 minute in the centre of defence as Roma defeated Genoa 3:2 in the Italian capital.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Missed the 0:1 home defeat to Napoli on Sunday.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Watched Napoli beat Cagliari from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Registered a clean sheet in the 1:0 triumph over Maritimo away from home.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Not included in the Benfica squad to play Maritimo.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Played the entire 90 minutes in a heavy 0:3 setback at Al-Taawon in Saudi Arabia.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Helped Leganes draw 0:0 at Celta Vigo by playing the full match in defence.

Apostolos Vellios (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Introduced as a substitute on 90 minutes and scored deep into stoppage time to seal a 2:0 triumph at Antwerp.

Carlos Zeca (Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Competed for 90 minutes in the confident 3:0 win at Sonderjyske.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Took a yellow card for his troubles while playing the 90 minutes in an eventful 1:1 draw against Rizespor.

Giannis Maniatis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Entered proceedings after 81 minutes as a substitute in the draw with Rizespor on the road.

Sotiris Ninis (Hapoel Ashkelon/Israeli Second Division): Injury prevented him from playing in the 0:0 draw with Nazareth at home.


Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): The back-up goalkeeper sat on the bench with Middlesbrough dropping a 1:2 loss against Queens Park Rangers.


Dimitris Diamantakos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Introduced as a substitute after 67 minutes of the 2:0 win against Furth and took a yellow card.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga 2): Produced an assist for Paderborn’s third goal in a 3:0 victory over Dresden. Played 90 minutes.


Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 1): Once again, he was left out of the Nimes team as the French club lost 2:3 at home to Lille.


Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Kept on the bench with AZ beating Excelsior 2:1.

Lazaros Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Remained on the bench in an important 2:0 win against Feyenoord in Rotterdam.

Konstantinos Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): Sat with the other unused substitutes as Ajax destroyed De Graafschap 8:0 at home.

Dimitris Kolovos (Willem II/Eredivisie): Didn’t move from the bench. Willem II contrived to lose 0:3 at home against Den Haag.

Kaloudis Lemonis (Telstar/Eerste Divisie): Played no part in the 2:4 loss against Jong PSV.


Alexandros Katranis (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Couldn’t be found in the line-up to play St. Truiden. Mouscron won 2:0.

Giorgos Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League: Just like his fellow Greek, he wasn’t included in the Mouscron squad for the match against St. Truiden.

Charis Charisis (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Sat on the bench as Kortrijk picked up a 0:0 draw against Club Brugge.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Played the entire 90 minutes as Charleroi beat Gent 2:0 at home and made an assist.


Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Not included in the Maritimo roster for the 0:1 home defeat to Benfica.


Andreas Tatos (Elazigspor/First League): Played 90 minutes with Elazigspor thrashing Afjet Afyonspor 4:0 away.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Started the 1:1 draw at Istanbulspor and was later substituted after 67 minutes.


Marios Ogkmpoe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Missed the 0:1 loss to Rangers in Glasgow.

Charalampos Mavrias (Hibernian/Scottish Premiership): Did not play any part in Hibernian’s unexpected 2:0 triumph against reigning champions Celtic at home.


Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Wasn’t a part of the Basel roster at the weekend. The club defeated Sion 2:1 away from home.


Dimitris Goutas (Lech Poznan/Ekstraklasa): Stayed on the substitutes’ bench with Lech Poznan comfortably beating Sosnowiec 6:0.


Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Bulgarian First League): Kept a clean sheet in the emphatic 4:0 win against Vereya in Sofia.

Theofilos Kouroupis (FC Vereya/Bulgarian First League): Remained on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes as Vereya were no match for Slavia Sofia away.


Giorgos Katidis (Pribram/Czech First League): Sat on the bench in Pribram’s 1:1 draw against Sparta Prague,


Theofilos Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Given the full 90 minutes in the bench with Kisvarda defeating MTK Budapest 1:0 at home.


Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Played the entirety of a 3:0 triumph against Admira at home in Austria.

Taxiarchis Fountas (St. Polten/Austrian Bundesliga): Booked by the referee while playing 90 minutes in the comprehensive 1:5 defeat at Salzburg.


Dimitris Chouchoumis (Vojvodina/Serbian Superliga): Missing from the Vojvodina squad in a 0:0 draw against Proleter at home.

Nemanja Milojevic (Vojvodina/Serbian Superliga): Got 90 minutes under his belt in the goalless tie with Proleter.

Andreas Dermitzakis (Radnik/Serbian Superliga): Didn’t play any part in the 3:2 home victory against Backa.


Giorgos Katsikas (Dinamo Bucharesti/Romanian Liga 1): Not selected for the match against Craiova in Bucharest. Dinamo won 3:0.

Bruno Chalkiadakis (FC Hermannstadt/Romanian Liga 1): Missed the 2:0 win over Gaz Metan.

Aristidis Soiledis (FC Botosani/Romanian Liga 1): The coaches gave the Greek midfielder 90 minutes on the pitch with Botosani losing 1:3 at home against FCSB.


Avraam Papadopoulos (Brisbane Roar/A-League): Played 90 minutes in a 2:4 home loss to Melbourne Victory.
