Greeks Abroad Review: Diamantakos Shines In Good Weekend For The ‘Xenoi’

AGONAsport’s George Tsitsonis rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

Dimitris Diamantakos, Carlos, Zeca, and Andreas Tatos rose to the top of this weekend’s Greeks Abroad performers. Diamantakos, a halftime substitute, had a massive influence on his Bochum side’s win over Darmstadt. Tatos meanwhile pulled the strings in superb fashion leading Elazigspor to a big win. Zeca scored in his debut for FC Kobenhavn helping his side to a win over Midtjylland. Elsewhere, sturdy performances from Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Andreas Samaris, and Panagiotis Vlachodimos rounded a largely successful weekend for Greek players.

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Not selected in squad due to injury

Kostas Manolas (Roma/Serie A): His team’s match against Sampdoria was postponed due to severe weather

Vasilis Torosidis (Bologna/Serie A): Not selected in squad due to injury

Marios Oikonomou (SPAL/Serie A): Not selected in squad due to injury

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Started in the 2-1 over Portimonense and played the entire match

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/Bundesliga): Mainstay in the Dortmund defense. Played entire match in 0-0 draw with Freiburg

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/Bundesliga): Started and captained his side for full 90 minutes in 2-0 home loss to RB Leipzig

Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg/Bundesliga): Remained on the bench

Tasos Donis (VfB Stuttgart/Bundesliga): Came on as a sub in the 59th minute, but could not keep his side from losing 3-1 to Schalke

Dimitris Diamantakos (Bochum/ Bundesliga 2): Came on in the 46th minute and tied the match against Darmstadt in the 81st minute with his goal and laid on the assist for Bochum’s winner in the 86th minute

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Played entire game in 2-0 away win over Southampton

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): Remained on the bench

Carlos Zeca (FC Kobenhavn/Danish Superliga): Had a dream debut for his new side, scoring the winning goal in a 4-2 win over Midtjylland. Zeca played the full 90 minutes.

Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Came on as a 37th minute sub, couldn’t prevent his side from losing 3-1 to Sheffield Wednesday

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/Championship): Not selected in squad

Giannis Gianniotas (Real Valladolid/Segunda Division): Not selected in squad

Giannis Maniatis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Came on as a sub in the 85th minute of a 2-0 over Konyaspor

Giorgos Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played the full 90 minutes in a return to the starting line-up

Georgios Samaras (Samsunspor/Turkish 1. Lig): Started match for first time this season, but came off at the half

Michalis Sifakis (Samsunspor/Turkish 1. Lig): Remained on the bench

Basis Lykogiannis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Played entire match in loss to LASK Linz

Nikos Karelis (Genk/Belgium First Division A): Not selected in squad due to injury

Alexandros Tziolis (Al-Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Came on as a sub in the 70th minute in his team’s 2-0 victory over Al-Taawoun

Kostas Rougalas (Westerlo/Division B): Played entire match in 2-2 draw with Lierse


Andreas Tatos (Elazigspor/ 1. Lig): Scored his first goal while in Turkey to give his side a 3-1 away lead. Before that, had assisted in the lead-up to a 2-0 advantage

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/1. Lig): Started the match in the 1-0 win over Istanbulspor. Came off the pitch in the 89th minute


Giannis Skondras (Hamilton/Premier League): Played the entire 90 minutes in 5-1 home defeat to Celtic. Has played every minute of the season thus far (five matches)

Giorgos Sarris (Hamilton/Premier League): Along with teammate and countryman Skondras, played again this week versus Celtic and has not come out of the line-up yet


Charis Mavrias (Rijeka/Croatian First Football League): Impressive in his debut as a right-back. Started the sequences that led to the second and fourth goals

Stefanos Athanasiadis (Maccabi Haifa/Israeli Premier League): Debuted for Maccabi and played full match in a 2-0 defeat
