Greeks Abroad Review: Mavropanos given a chance by Arsenal


AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In Holland, James Efmorfidis struck gold for Almere in the Dutch second division, while Sebastian Vasiliadis of Paderborn scored in the German Bundesliga 2 and contributed with an assist in the same game. Stelios Kitsiou registered an assist for Ankaragucu in Turkey and Stergos Marinos also assisted a goal in Belgium with Charleroi.

Konstantinos Mavropanos finally returned to the Arsenal line-up, Dimitris Nikolaou made his debut for Empoli, Odysseas Vlachodimos helped Benfica continue winning and Stefanos Kapino played in his maiden Bundesliga match for Werder Bremen.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of former/current national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Missed the 1:0 victory at Watford.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Started the 1:0 win against Watford and was substituted in the 59th minute.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Didn’t compete in the 0:1 loss to Arsenal at home.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): The injured defender wasn’t available to play in the match against VfB Stuttgart. His club claimed a 1:0 victory on the road.

Anastasios Donis (VfB Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Used as a substitute with 20 minutes remaining of the 0:1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): At half time, the Greek goalkeeper emerged from the bench to make his debut for Werder Bremen. He conceded one goal in a 2:1 victory against Freiburg.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Played the entire 90 minutes in a 3:1 win in Frankfurt.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): Kept on the bench during a 1:1 draw with Cologne in the German second tier.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Played the entirety of a 1:0 victory against Udinese in the Italian capital.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Joined the action in the 85th minute against Torino in Turin. The match ended in a 1:1 draw.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Kept on the bench with Napoli defeating Chievo Verona 3:1 away from home.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie A): The young Olympiacos loanee made his maiden appearance for Empoli in the 0:0 draw against Atalanta. Started the game and was substituted in the 79th minute.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie B): Included in the starting line-up to play Carpi and played the full 90 minutes in the 4:1 win.

Apostolos Vellios (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Missed the 2:3 loss against Cercle Brugge.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Conceded two goals in the 4:2 victory over Setubal in Lisbon.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Played the full 90 minute in the 4:2 triumph against Setubal.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Helped Leganes play to a 1:1 draw against giants Real Madrid by playing 90 minute in defence.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (Galatasaray/Turkish Super Lig): Emerged from the bench as a substitute in the 84th minute against Fenerbahce. The derby finished level at 1:1.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Received a yellow card while playing the full match against Yeni Malatyaspor. Alanyaspor picked up a 1:1 draw.

Carlos Zeca (Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Did not play any part in the 2:1 win against Brondby.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Played the entire 90 minutes with Al Fayha defeating Ohod 3:1 on the road.

ENGLAND

Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Kept on the bench as Middlesbrough defeated Hull City 1:0.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Missed the 1:1 draw against Bielefeld.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga 2): Made an assist for the first goal in a 4:0 triumph over Duisburg and then scored a marker himself. Booked by the referee and played 90 minutes.

FRANCE

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 1): Did not play in the 1:2 loss to Marseille.

HOLLAND

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Missed the dramatic 2:3 loss to Den Haag at home.

Konstantinos Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): Watched Ajax defeat Excelsior 6:2 from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Lazaros Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Started the 1:1 draw against VVV Venlo and was substituted after 86 minutes of play.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Substituted in the 30th minute against Zwolle. Willem II gained a 2:0 victory.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Included in the starting line-up to play Zwolle and was taken off in the final minute of the game.

James Efmorfidis (Almere/Eerste Divisie): Scored in the 3:1 victory against Den Bosch. Started the game and was substituted in the 90th minute.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Kept on the bench in a 2:2 draw against Zulte Waregem on the road.

Charis Charisis (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Remained an unused substitute with Kortrijk losing 0:1 at home to St. Gilloise.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Assisted the winning goal as Charleroi defeated Westerlo 2:0. Played the full 90 minutes.

PORTUGAL

Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Didn’t play in the 2:0 victory against Feirense.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Giorgos Katidis (Pribram/Czech First League): Kept out of the squad for a 0:2 defeat to Slovacko away from home.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Made an assist for the first goal in a 2:0 victory against Kayserispor and was yellow carded. Played the entire 90 minutes.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/First League): Started the 2:2 draw against Adana Demirspor and was substituted in the penultimate minute of the game.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Scored in a 2:1 victory against Altinordu and was substituted with five minutes left.

Giorgos Georgiadis (Elazigspor/First League): Didn’t compete in a 1:3 loss to Eskisehirspor.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Missed the 0:0 home draw against Grasshoppers.

SWEDEN

Giannis Anestis (IFK Goteborg/Allsvenskan): Conceded twice in a 1:2 defeat to Djurgården in Stockholm.

SERBIA

Nemanja Milojevic (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Joined the match against Proleter as a substitute in the 71st minute. Vojvodina lost 0:1.

Diamantis Chouchoumis (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Not a member of the matchday squad with Vojvodina losing 0:1 to Proleter at home.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Conceded five goals with Slavia suffering a heavy 3:5 setback at home to Dunav Ruse.

Theofilos Kouroupis (FC Vereya/Parva Liga): Unfortunately, the Greek inadvertently scored two own goals in a 0:5 thrashing at the hands of Botev Vratsa. Played 90 minutes.

SLOVAKIA

Lazaros Rota (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Remained an unused substitute with his team losing 0:1 to Ruzomberok.

Christos Kountouriotis (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Started the 0:1 defeat against Ruzomberok and was later substituted in the 75th minute.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FC Botosani/Romanian Liga 1): Started the 1:0 win against FC Hermannstadt and was replaced after 53 minutes.

Giorgos Koutroubis (Concordia/Romanian Liga 1): Played the entire 90 minutes in a 3:0 triumph over Calarasi and picked up a yellow card.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Dinamo Bucharest/Romanian Liga 1): Competed for the full 90 minutes with his club defeating Poli Iasi 1:0.

Chrysovalantis Kozoronis (Petrolul/Romanian Liga 2): Didn’t play in a 1:3 loss to Luceafarul Oradea.

Giorgos Sarris (Petrolul/Romanian Liga 2): Missed the 1:3 defeat against Luceafarul Oradea on the road.

AUSTRIA

Athanasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austria Bundesliga): Played the entire 90 minutes of a 1:3 defeat to Salzburg.

Taxiarchis Fountas (St. Polten/Austrian Bundesliga): Did not participate in a match against LASK Linz. The game ended 0:0.

Kosmas Gezos (Austria Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga 2): Stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes with his team playing to a 2:2 draw against SV Horn.

BELARUS

Giorgos Katsikas (Dynamo Brest/Belarusian Premier League): Kept on the bench with Dynamo Brest defeating perennial champions BATE 1:0 in Borisov.

POLAND

Giannis Mystakidis (Górnik Zabrze/Ekstraklasa): Missed the 1:0 victory against Slask.

Giorgos Mygas (Sosnowiec/Ekstraklasa): Played the entire 90 minutes with Sosnowiec losing 1:3 at home to Plock.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played 90 minutes against DVTK at home. The game finished level at 1:1.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Like his fellow Greek, he played the entirety of the 1:1 draw with DVTK.

AZERBAIJAN

Vangelis Platellas (Neftchi Baku/Premier League): Played the full match against Sabail with the two sides tallying a 2:2 draw.
