AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

Young Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos finally made his English Premier League debut, playing the full game against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Gunners dropped a 1:2 defeat, but Mavropanos earned plenty of plaudits for his superb performance, impressing with his remarkable confidence.

Elsewhere, Dimitris Diamantakos scored his first for St Pauli, Andreas Tatos hit the target with Elazigspor in Turkey and Konstantinos Stavrothanasopoulos grabbed a goal with Swedish club Frej.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players and/or Greeks playing in high profile leagues):

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Emerged from the bench after 81 minutes of action in the 1:1 draw with Angers.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Premiera Liga): Finally played the entire 90 minutes of a league match for Benfica. His team lost 2:3 to Tondela at home.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/German Bundesliga): Received a yellow card in Dortmund’s 1:1 away draw against Werder Bremen. Played 90 minutes.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Remained on the pitch for the entirety of the 0:1 home loss to Stuttgart.

Tasos Donis (Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Came off the bench as a substitute for the final four minutes of Stuttgart’s 1:0 victory in Leverkusen.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga): Helped Hamburg defeat Wolfsburg 3:1 by playing the 90 minutes. Earned a yellow card for himself.

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Played the full match against Tottenham as Watford dropped a 0:2 defeat.

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): Kept goal for Watford in the same match, conceding two goals.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Made his senior Arsenal at Manchester United, impressing and hitting the headlines with his superb display in the 1:2 defeat. Played the whole game.

Kostas Stafylidis (Stoke City/English Premier League): Remains on the sidelines with a reported chest injury. Stoke drew 0:0 with Liverpool.

Stefanos Kapino (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Registered a clean sheet in the 0:0 tie against Bristol City in Nottingham.

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Stayed on the bench in the same game with Bristol City.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Started the 4:1 win against Chievo Verona as a substitute, joining the action after 60 minutes.

Vassilis Torosidis (Bologna/Serie A): Didn’t move from the bench in Bologna’s 1:2 loss to AC Milan at home.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Kept the other substitutes company. Cagliari dropped a damaging 1:4 defeat against Sampdoria on the road.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Superlig): Competed in the heart of defence for the full 90 minutes in the 2:1 victory away to Kayserispor.

Giannis Maniatis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Superlig): Just like his fellow Greek, he played the full match against Kayserispor in Turkey.

Georgios Samaras (Samsunspor/First League): Replaced after 81 minutes of the 1:2 defeat to Giresunspor.

Michalis Sifakis (Samsunspor/First League): As usual, the back-up goalkeeper stayed on the bench in the same match.

Giannis Gianniotas (Valladolid/Segunda Division): Kept the bench warm in Valladolid’s 1:1 tie against Cadiz.

Giannis Fetfatzidis (Al Ahli/Saudi Professional League): Al Ahli won’t play again until the coming Saturday.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): The 2017/2018 Saudi Professional League has reached its conclusion.

Nikolaos Karelis (Genk/Jupiler League): Played 70 minutes of the 1:1 draw against Club Brugge before being substituted.

Carlos Zeca (Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Started the 3:2 win against Horsens, leaving the pitch after 66 minutes.

Sotiris Ninis (Maccabi Petah-Tikva/Israeli Premier League): Did not play any part in the 1:2 defeat to Hapoel Akko.


Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Couldn’t be found in Nottingham’s roster for the 0:0 tie against Bristol City.

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Stayed on the bench as the number two goalkeeper in the 2:0 home victory over Millwall.

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis (Cheltenham/English League 2): Took a yellow card while playing the full 90 minutes in the 1:6 thrashing at the hands of Coventry.


Giannis Gelios (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Not in the Augsburg squad for the 2:2 draw against Hertha Berlin.

Dimitris Diamantakos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Scored the opening goal in the 3:0 triumph over Greuther Furth at home. Played the entire 90 minutes. 


Georgios Koutroubis (Standard Liege/Jupiler League): Played the full 90 minutes of Standard Liege’s confident 3:1 triumph away to Gent, picked up a yellow card for his troubles.

Stergos Marinos (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): Didn’t participate in the large 4:1 beating of Oostende at home.

Stelios Kitsiou (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): The club’s second Greek who wasn’t included in the match-day squad on the weekend.

Charis Charisis (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): Began the 4:1 victory against Oostende in the starting line-up, replaced after 81 minutes of action.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Played the final 10 minutes of the game against Lierse which ended in a 2:1 win for Kortrijk.

Georgios Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Remained on the bench during the 1:2 home setback to Zulte Waregem.

Konstantinos Rougalas (Westerlo/Proximus League): Kept the other substitutes company in Westerlo’s 1:1 draw at home to Tubize.


Marinos Oikonomou (Bari/Serie B): Played no part in either the 1:0 win against Entella or the 1:1 draw with Palermo in Serie B.

Michalis Iliadis (Salernitana/Serie B): Not in Salernitana’s squad for the 4:2 win against Brescia and the 1:1 tie with Perugia.

Dimitris Konstantinidis (Brescia/Serie B): Exactly like the previous two Greeks, he didn’t play in the 2:4 loss to Salernitana and the 1:2 home defeat against Frosinone.

Dimitris Sounas (Monopoli/Serie C): Stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes in the 2:2 draw against Trapani on the road.


Andreas Tatos (Elazigspor/First League): Grabbed a goal for the second week in a row, scoring after 18 minutes of the 1:4 loss to Erzurum BB and taking a yellow card. Played the full match.

Andreas Vasiliogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Replaced after 76 minutes of the 0:1 defeat at home to Rizespor in the second level of Turkish football.


Anastasios Karamanos (Feirense/Portuguese Premiera Liga): Stayed on the bench during the 2:0 away victory at Setubal.


Alexandros Katranis (St. Etienne/Ligue 1): Not involved in the 1:0 away victory at Montpellier in the French top flight.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 2): Was kept on the bench by Nimes’ head coach in the 1:1 draw against Clermont.

Giannis Charontakis (AC Ajaccio/Ligue 2): Wasn’t seen in the AC Ajaccio squad for 0:2 defeat against Le Havre.


Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Despite playing 90 minutes against Real Madrid, the Greek defender couldn’t prevent Leganes from dropping a 1:2 setback.


Kostas Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): The second Ajax goalkeeper watched the 3:0 win over AZ Alkmaar from the comfort of the bench.

Konstantinos Tsimikas (Willem II/Eredivisie): Stayed on the pitch at the left-back position for the eternity of the 1:0 away victory against Zwolle.

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): He was gifted 90 minutes against Ajax in the 0:3 defeat in Amsterdam.

Thanasis Karagounis (Twente/Eredivisie): Yet again the Greek wasn’t in the roster. Twente were hammered 0:6 by Vitesse.


Georgios Sarris (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Remained on the field for the whole 90 minutes against Ross County, picking up a booking in the 2:0 victory.

Giannis Skondras (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Nowhere to be seen in Hamilton’s line-up for the same match in Scotland.

Chrysovalantis Kozoronis (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Also didn’t play in the weekend’s Scottish Premiership game.

Marios Ogkmpoe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Started the 2:0 victory over Ross County, replaced six minutes before the match’s completion.


Savvas Gentsoglou (Hajduk Split/HNL): Earned an early yellow card in the 0:0 draw with Slaven Belupo, played the entire game.

Charalampos Mavrias (Rijeka/HNL): Didn’t participate in the 1:0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb in the Croatian capital.


Sotirios Papagiannopoulos (Ostersunds/Allsvenskan): Played the 90 minutes in Ostersunds’ crushing 4:0 triumph against Brommapojkarna.

Konstantinos Stavrothanasopoulos (Frej/Superettan): Scored the opening goal against Varbergs before making an assist for the second. However, Frej eventually lost the match 2:3.


Stefanos Athanasiadis (Maccabi Haifa/Israeli Premier League): Not included in the match-day squad for Maccabi Haifa’s narrow 1:2 loss to Shmona at home.


Georgios Katsidis (Olympia Prague/League 2): Wasn’t in the Olympia Prague roster when the team lost 0:1 to Sokolov.

Thomas Vasiliou (Olympia Prague/League 2): Also didn’t participate in the same match in the second Czech division.


Mavroudis Bougaidis (Podbeskidzie/Polish League 1): Stayed on the pitch for 90 minutes in the Polish club’s 3:1 victory against Puszcza.


Thanos Petsos (Rapid Vienna/Austrian Bundesliga): Didn’t move from the bench in the 2:4 loss to Sturm Graz on the road.


Nikos Ioannidis (Diosgyori/Nemzeti Bajnokság): Played 90 minutes against Ujpest and couldn’t stop Diosgyori from losing 0:1.


Sokratis Fytanidis (Gaz Metan/Liga 1): The 33-year old Greek defender played the entirety of the 2:1 home victory over FC Botosani.

Alexandros Fioretos (Gaz Metan/Liga 1): Not a part of Gaz Metan’s roster for the same match in the Romanian Liga 1.

Giorgos Katsikas (Dinamo Bucharesti/Liga 1): Didn’t participate in the surprise 0:2 defeat against Sepsi.


Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Couldn’t be found in the Slavia Sofia squad for the match against Pirin Blagoevgrad. His club claimed a 2:1 victory.


Giannis Kargas (Dynamo Brest/Belarusian Premier League): Competed for 90 minutes in the pulsating 3:3 draw with FC Minsk in Belarus.


Alexandros Tambakis (North Carolina/USL): Registered a clean sheet in North Carolina’s convincing 3:0 win over Penn.
