Greeks Abroad Review: Samaris scores first goal of the campaign

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in foreign leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In Portugal, Greek midfielder Andreas Samaris scored his maiden goal of the Liga NOS season, grabbing the second marker in a 2:2 draw against Belenenses with a sweetly struck volley. Goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos was at fault for the first conceded goal in the same match in the Portuguese capital.

Over in Holland, Marios Vrousai and Vangelis Pavlidis continued their excellent form for Willem II, contributing with assists in a 3:2 home victory over De Graafschap. Stergos Marinos also tallied an assist with Charleroi in the Jupiler League.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Played 90 minutes in the important 2:0 triumph against Manchester United at home.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Didn’t play any part in the match with Manchester United in London.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Kept the bench warm as Watford lost 1:3 to Manchester City on the road.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): The young injured defender wasn’t available to compete against Hannover 96 away from home. Bayer Leverkusen won 3:2.

Anastasios Donis (VfB Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Emerged as a substitute for the final 20 minutes of a 1:3 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Wasn’t in the squad to play RB Leipzig as he recovers from an injury. The match ended in a 0:0 draw.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): Sat on the bench as Werder Bremen defeated Schalke 04 4:2 at home.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): Out with a long term injury, he did not play in the 4:0 victory against St Pauli in the second tier of German football.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Missed the 2:1 victory against Empoli with an injury sustained on UEFA Champions League duty.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Didn’t move from the substitutes’ bench in a 0:2 defeat to Bologna.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Sat on the bench with Napoli only managing to draw 1:1 against Sassuolo on the road.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie A): Watched Empoli lose 1:2 to AS Roma from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie B): Started the 1:0 home victory against Foggia and was later replaced after 80 minutes.

Apostolos Vellios (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Didn’t play in a 1:1 home draw with Zulte Waregem.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Conceded two goals in a 2:2 tie against Belenenses in Lisbon.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): The in-form midfielder scored Benfica’s second goal in the 2:2 draw with Belenenses. Started the game and was taken off with 12 minutes remaining.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Didn’t play in the 0:1 loss against Atletico Madrid.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (Galatasaray/Turkish Super Lig): Entered proceedings in the 80th minute as a substitute. Galatasaray thrashed Antalyaspor 5:0 at home.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played the entire 90 minutes in a 2:1 home triumph over Erzurum BB.

Carlos Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Remained on the pitch for the full game against Nordsjaelland. FC Copenhagen drew the match 2:2.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Used as a substitute after 76 minutes of the 0:2 loss to Al Ittihad. Incidentally, Aleksandar Prijovic, who left PAOK in the winter, scored the two Al Ittihad goals in the game.

ENGLAND

Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): The back-up goalkeeper sat on the bench with his club losing 1:2 at home to Brentford.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantopoulos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Remained on the bench in a comprehensive 0:4 home setback to Hamburg.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga 2): Played the entire 90 minutes of a 1:2 loss against Aue.

FRANCE

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 1): As usual, he was left out of the squad. Nimes lost 1:2 to Amiens.

HOLLAND

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Stayed on the bench in a 0:0 draw against Zwolle on the road.

Lazaros Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Started the 0:4 loss to Ajax in Amsterdam and was substituted after 74 minutes.

Konstantinos Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Kept the bench warm in the 4:0 beating of Fortuna Sittard.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Made an assist for the third goal in a 3:2 win against De Graafschap. Played the entire game and was booked by the referee.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Contributed with an assist for his team’s opening goal in the victory over De Graafschap at home. Also played 90 minutes.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Used as a substitute after 27 minutes against St. Truiden. The game finished level at 1:1.

Charis Charisis (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Received a yellow card and played 78 minutes of the 0:2 loss against Anderlecht.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Popped up with an assist for the second goal in a 2:1 victory at Antwerp. Played the entire game.

PORTUGAL

Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Not included in the squad for the 3:2 home win against Moreirense.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Giorgos Katidis (Pribram/Czech First League): Wasn’t a member of the roster to play Mlada Boleslav. His club lost 0:2.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes in a 0:0 home draw against Bursaspor.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/First League): Started the 0:1 loss to Genclerbirligi on the road and was substituted in the 83rd minutes after being yellow carded.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Included in the starting line-up in the 0:0 draw with Denizlispor and substituted in the last minute of play.

Giorgos Georgiadis (Elazigspor/First League): Left out of the squad as Elazigspor lost 0:2 to Gaziantep.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Not included in the Basel team to play Lugano. The teams played to a 1:1 tie.

SWEDEN

Giannis Anestis (IFK Goteborg/Allsvenskan): Goteborg did not have a competitive match this weekend.

SERBIA

Nemanja Milojevic (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Started the 0:0 draw against Napredak and was removed at half time.

Diamantis Chouchoumis (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Missing from the Vojvodina squad for the match with Napredak on the road.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Left out of the team as Slavia defeated Septemvri Sofia 2:1.

Theofilos Kouroupis (FC Vereya/Parva Liga): Used as a substitute for the closing 21 minutes of an emphatic 0:3 loss to Botev Vratsa away from home.

SLOVAKIA

Lazaros Rota (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Unfortunately, he contrived to score an own goal in a 4:2 victory against Trencin at home. He played 90 minutes and took a yellow card for his troubles.

Christos Kountouriotis (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Emerged from the bench as a substitute after 58 minutes of action in the same match with Trencin.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FC Botosani/Romanian Liga 1): Played 90 minutes in the 0:0 draw with Concordia at home.

Giorgos Koutroubis (Concordia/Romanian Liga 1): Did not play in the 0:0 tie against FC Botosani.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Dinamo Bucharest/Liga 1): Started the 2:0 home victory against Calarasi and was substituted after 75 minutes.

Chrysovolontis Kozoronis (Petrolul/Romanian Liga 2): Did not play in a 0:0 draw against Chindia Targoviste.

Giorgos Sarris (Petrolul/Romanian Liga 2): Played the entirety of the 0:0 tie with Chindia Targoviste on the road.

AUSTRIA

Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Missing from the team as Sturm Graz picked up a 0:0 draw at runaway leaders Salzburg.

Taxiarchis Fountas (St. Polten/Austrian Bundesliga): Remained on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes with his club losing 2:3 at Admira.

Kosmas Gezos (Austria Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga 2): Played 90 minutes in a 1:1 draw against Wattens.

POLAND

Giannis Mystakidis (Górnik Zabrze/Ekstraklasa): Started the 0:2 home loss to Plast and was substituted after 62 minutes.

Giorgos Mygas (Sosnowiec/Ekstraklasa): Began the game against Cracovia and was replaced in stoppage time at the end of the second half. Sosnowiec lost 1:2.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played the whole game against Honved. The game ended in a 1:1 draw.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): The fellow Greek on Kisvarda’s books also played 90 minutes of the 1:1 tie with Honved.

AZERBAIJAN

Vangelis Platellas (Neftchi Baku/Premier League): Started the 2:1 victory against Sumgait and was substituted after earning a yellow card from the referee.

INDIA

Panagiotis Triadis (North East United/Indian Super League): Sat on the bench in the 2:1 playoff win in the first leg against Bengaluru, and in the second, he was used as a substitute after 60 minutes as his club lost 0:3.
