Greeks Abroad Review: Season debut for Mavropanos, Vrousai scores

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In England, young defender Konstantinos Mavropanos finally made his 2018/2019 bow in the Premier League, playing the final minutes of a 1:3 loss for Arsenal at reigning champions Manchester City. Over in the Netherlands, Olympiacos loanee Marios Vrousai struck gold for Willem II, scoring in a 1:2 home defeat to Groningen. Andreas Tatos also registered a goal, equalising for Altay in the Turkish second division.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players and/or those playing in high profile leagues):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): The injured centre-back wasn’t available to participate in the 1:3 away defeat to Manchester City.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): On 79 minutes, the promising 21-year-old made an appearance as a substitute in the 1:3 loss to Manchester City on the road.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Played 90 minutes in the 0:0 draw against Brighton.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Missed the 3:1 league win over Bayer Leverkusen and the 1:2 German Cup loss against Heidenheim through an ongoing injury.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Remained on the pitch for 90 minutes in the confident 3:0 beating of Mainz at home.

Anastasios Donis (VfB Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Started the 2:2 home draw with Freiburg and was replaced at half-time after receiving a yellow card.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): The back-up goalkeeper stayed on the bench with his club drawing 2:2 against Nurnberg.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): The international defender missed the 0:2 defeat to Bielefeld and the 1:0 German Cup win over Nurnberg because of a long term injury.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Booked by the referee as he played the entire 90 minutes in a 1:1 draw against AC Milan in the Italian capital.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Kept the bench warm with Cagliari dropping a narrow 0:1 home loss to Atalanta.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Didn’t move from the bench in Napoli’s emphatic 3:0 home win over visitors Sampdoria.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie A): Stayed on the bench as Empoli drew 2:2 at home with Chievo.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie B): Was in the starting line-up to play Ascoli, however the game in the second tier of Italian football was abandoned with the score at 0:0.

Apostolos Vellios (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Not included in the squad with Waasland-Beveren losing 1:2 at home to Genk.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Red carded after 85 minutes of the thrilling 4:2 victory against Lisbon rivals Sporting away from home.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): The improving midfielder was given 90 minutes on the pitch in the 4:2 triumph over Sporting Lisbon.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): The defender helped Leganes defeat Rayo Vallecano 2:1 on the road by playing 90 minutes.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (Galatasaray/Turkish Super Lig): Made his debut in a 1:1 draw against Alanyaspor and was replaced after 54 minutes of action.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Took a yellow card for his troubles and played the entirety of the 1:1 draw with Galatasaray at home.

Alexandros Tziolis (Al Fayha/Saudi Professional League): Played the entire 90 minutes in a 0:2 defeat against Al Qadisiya.


Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Sat on the bench in a dramatic 3:2 victory for Middlesbrough at West Bromwich Albion.


Dimitris Diamantakos (St. Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Didn’t play in the 3:2 home win against Union Berlin in the second Bundesliga.


Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 1): Did not participate in the 1:1 home draw with Montpellier.


Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Emerged as a substitute with 10 minutes remaining of the 5:0 home triumph over FC Emmen.

Lazaros Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Wasn’t seen in the roster as his club fell 0:5 at the hands of league leaders PSV in Eindhoven.

Konstantinos Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): Kept the other substitutes company on the bench with Ajax destroying VVV Venlo 6:0 at home.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored in the second half in a 1:2 home defeat to Groningen. Played the full 90 minutes.

Evangelos Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Came off the bench at half-time in the 1:2 loss against Groningen.

Kaloudis Lemonis (Telstar/Eerste Divisie): Didn’t feature in the 0:2 away defeat against Maastricht in the Netherlands.


Giorgos Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Remained an unused substitute in a large 3:0 victory over Charleroi.

Charis Charisis (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Stayed on the bench as Mouscron defeated Lokeren 2:1 at home.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Received a yellow card while playing the entire 90 minutes in his team’s heavy 0:3 defeat to Mouscron.


Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): As usual, he wasn’t a member of the matchday squad. Maritimo lost 0:1 on the road against Chaves.


Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played the 90 minutes of a 0:1 away setback against Trabzonspor.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/First League): Equalised for Altay from the penalty spot on 82 minutes. Played the entire game.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Started the 1:0 win against Boluspor at the weekend and was replaced after 64 minutes. On Tuesday, he was introduced as a half-time substitute in the 0:0 draw at Trabzonspor in the first leg of the Turkish Cup quarter-finals.


Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Missed the 4:0 away win against Grasshoppers.


Marios Ogkmpoe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Wasn’t seen in the Hamilton team as the club drew 1:1 at home to Dundee FC.


Bruno Chalkiadakis (FC Hermannstadt/Romanian Liga 1): Did not play any part in the 1:1 draw against CFR Cluj.

Aris Soiledis (FC Botosani/Romanian Liga 1): Competed for the entire 90 minutes in a 1:0 away triumph over Concordia.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Dinamo Bucharesti/Romanian Liga 1): Missed the 3:0 home win against Poli Iasi in Bucharest.


Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Took a yellow card and played 90 minutes in a 1:0 victory against Haladas on the road.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Started the win over Haladas and was later substituted with 14 minutes left on the clock.


Vangelis Platellas (Neftci Baku/Premier League): Started the 1:1 draw with Qarabag and was taken off after 81 minutes of the away game.
