Greens birthday celebrations fall flat against Panetolikos
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 20
|Panathinaikos||0 - 0||Panetolikos|
Panathinaikos failed to celebrate their 110th Birthday with a victory on Saturday night, as Marinos Ouzounidis’ struggling team stuttered to a goalless draw against a revitalized Panaitolikos.
“Today Panathinaikos is celebrating its 110th birthday, Happy Birthday to the biggest sports club in the country; to the team of our lives!” That was the message posted by Panathinaikos earlier in the day, but the reality could not have been further as the seriously depleted Trifylli flattered to deceive against the Kanarinia.
Creative midfielder Ergys Kaçe, a recent loan signing from PAOK, was drafted into the starting lineup in Agrinio but he couldn’t spark the Greens to life in what was another lifeless attacking display bereft of creativity and scoring chances.
To be fair, Panathinaikos’ crippling financial situation has meant that the squad has been decimated as players have been sold to try and make ends meet. But failed to do the basics right against Traianos Dellas spirited Panaitolikos team who might have won the match on another day had it not been for the brilliance of Panathinaikos goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.
One suspects he could be one of the first players out of the door in the summer when the transfer window reopens again. The 23-year-old showed his value - as he has done so many times already this season - again with a string of fine saves.
The result leaves Panathinaikos languising down in eighth place in the standings with just 24 points from 20 matches. The Greens are 19 points adrift of league leaders PAOK.
