PAOK claimed derby honours over local rivals Aris as the Dikefalos tou Vorra inched their way to a 58-62 win at a hostile Alexandreio on Saturday night.
William Hatcher, who despite not enjoying one of his marquee performances, steered PAOK to the win with 11 points as the visitors used a strong start to the contest to take the fans out of the contest.
An 11-19 run in the first quarter helped PAOK establish an early lead, which held through to half time as Aris struggled to slow down PAOK’s high-tempo start to the contest.
PAOK extended their lead to 12 points early in the second half and perhaps that advantage on the scoreboard led to a complacent attitude from Ilias Papatheodorou’s men.
That complacency allowed Aris to quickly erase PAOK’s lead in the third quarter and even seize a lead of their own (45-44) late in the third quarter.
A late basket before the end of the third frame put PAOK back on top heading into the fourth quarter as the visitors looked to regain their composure in the final frame.
Despite letting their double-digit lead slip, PAOK made amends for the poor play with an improved effort in the fourth quarter. A tight, low scoring final frame certainly made for an anxious finish at the Nick Galis Hall as PAOK held on for their fourth-straight win over their crosstown rivals.
The defeat puts yet another dent in Aris’ playoff hopes as Giannis Kastritis’ side now sit three points behind Holargos for the final playoff spot with a tough test against high-flying AEK looming next weekend.
PAOK, meanwhile, pulled level with Promitheas and Peristeri for third place in the standings and the Dikefalos tou Vorra will hope to soar further up the table when they host Lavrio at the PAOK Sports Arena next Saturday.
