Wednesday was a historic day for Olympiacos volleyball as both the Men’s and Women’s teams advanced to the final of the 2018 CEV Challenge Cup. It is the first time in club history that both the Men’s and Women’s teams have qualified for the CEV Challenge Cup final in the same year and this occurrence is a first for the CEV Challenge Cup competition since it began back in 2007/08.

The Men’s team defeated Surgut over two legs (0:3, 3:0 set) to advance to their sixth European Cup final in club history. Olympiacos has two European Cup titles to their name, the 1996 CEV Cup Winners Cup and the 2005 CEV Top Teams Cup, and finished as runner-ups in the 1992, 2002 CEV Champions League, and 1997, 1998 CEV Cup Winners Cup. In addition, Olympiacos has twelve appearances in the Final-4 of European Volleyball competitions. The Erythrolefki are Greece’s most successive team in domestic play with 27 League Championships, 17 Greek Cups, 2 Super Cups, 4 League Cups, and 14 League/Cup doubles.

The Men’s team will play Italy’s Ravenna in the 2018 CEV Challenge Cup Final. Ravenna was Olympiacos’ opponents back in the 1992 CEV Champions League final, which was Olympiacos’ first appearance in a European final in club history. Unfortunately for the Greek side, Ravenna prevailed in the final to win the 1992 crown. The first leg will take place on April 4th in Italy with the return leg scheduled for April 11th at the packed Peace and Friendship stadium in Piraeus, where the Erytholefki will look to win their third European title.

The Women’s team advanced to the CEV Challenge Cup Final for a second year running with two wins over Russian side Dinamo Krasnodar (3:2, 0:3). This will be the women’s team second appearance in a European cup final in club history after last year’s surprise run in the CEV Challenge Cup. The Erythrolefkes have dominated Greek volleyball as of late having won five consecutive domestic League/Cup doubles.

The Women’s team will matchup against Turkey’s Bursaspor in the 2018 CEV Challenge Cup final, a repeat of last year’s final. Olympiacos will look for revenge over their Turkish opponents, who defeated the Erythrolefkes in last year’s final with a dominating 3:0 set win in the return leg (Olympiacos won the first leg 3:2 in Piraeus).
