Holebas not returning to the Ethniki
Jose Holebas will not return to the Greek national team for the time being after talkings with technical director, Angelos Basinas, fell through.
Since 2016, left-back Jose Holebas has refused to be called up to the Greek national team, however recent reports suggested that the 34-year-old was considering a return. Greece’s technical director, Angelos Basinas, has been in communication with the Watford left back over the last month, but Holebas made his stance clear. He would like to focus his career at the club level with Watford in the English Premier League. Holebas has had an outstanding season in England contributing with three goals and six assists in just 20 matches. The former international boasts 38 senior caps for Greece, scoring just one goal (friendly against Ireland).
Thankfully, Greece currently house lots of talent in the left back position with the likes of Leonardo Koutris (Olympiacos), Kostas Tsimikas (Olympiacos), Dimitris Giannoulis (PAOK), and Kostas Stafylidis (Augsburg) in good form at the club level. Stafylidis and now out of favor Georgios Tzavellas, were Greece’s main left backs in the last World Cup qualifying campaign and in the UEFA Nations League, fresh blood was introduced through Tsimikas, Koutris, and Giannoulis.
Greek coach, Angelos Anastasiadis, also has his eyes on Asteras Tripolis left back Georgios Kyriakopoulos and will attend Sunday’s matchup between Apollon Smyrnis and the Arkades to scout out the 22-year old. He will then head over to the OAKA stadium to watch Sunday’s big derby clash between AEK and PAOK.
