Injured Kourbelis to miss Finland showdown
After picking up an injury on Friday, midfielder Dimitris Kourbelis has left the Greek national team, meaning he won’t participate in the upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Finland.
Yesterday, 24-year old Panathinaikos captain Kourbelis was included in the starting line-up to play the Hungarians in Athens, however he was replaced at half time after a tepid showing. Nevertheless, after the match reached its completion, it became known that Kourbelis picked up an injury against Hungary and he was substituted as a direct result of his knock.
Unfortunately for Greek national team boss Michael Skibbe, the doctors confirmed that Kourbelis won’t recover in time for the UEFA Nations League match against Finland on Monday (Tampere, 21:45 GR) and he will return to club side Panathinaikos. Kourbelis joins Marios Oikonomou, Vasilis Torosidis and Petros Mantalos on the list of players who were initially called up by Skibbe but had to leave because of injuries.
Veteran midfielder Alexandros Tziolis was the substitute for Kourbelis against Hungary, and taking into account his assured performance in the middle of the park, it’s expected that the experienced 33-year old will start in Tampere on Monday. Greece fly to Finland tomorrow morning.
