Ionikos score a record breaking 197 points against Ethnikos
Ionikos scored a record-breaking 197 points against Ethnikos in Saturday’s A2 Basket League action as they demolished their opponents with an 81-point margin of victory.
It was a record breaking night for Ionikos in the A2 Basket League as they scored a whopping 197 points in a 197:116 demolition job of Ethnikos Piraeus. The final score was preceded by a halftime score of 102:57!
The 197 points scored is a new Greek basketball record surpassing the record of 172 points, which was also set by Ionikos during the 2009/10 season. In that match, they defeated Chalkida 172:45. Iraklis hold the next best record with 170 points scored set in the 1971/1972 campaign.
The 81-point margin of victory ties the all-time record set during the 1989/90 season when Papagou defeated Filippou 130:49.
On Saturday, the two teams combined for a total of 313 points, which sets another Greek basketball record.
Vaggelis Karaboulas led Ionikos with 61 points, a new A2 Basket League record, finishing the game with 5/5 FTs, 82 FG%, and 10/18 from three-point range. Fotis Vasilopoulos recorded an impressive triple-double with 22 points, 23 assists, and 10 rebounds while Mavrokefalidis also registered 26 points of his own.
Ethnikos did threaten to abandon the match at halftime as they felt that Ionikos did not uphold the ‘fair play’ standards. Nikos Michalos, in fact, refused to play and left the match at halftime.
Ionikos hold a two-point advantage over Iraklis atop the table and are well on their way to promotion to next year’s A1 Basket League while Ethnikos are doomed for relegated.
