Iraklis to compete in 2019/2020 Gamma Ethniki
This time last year, Iraklis were hoping to make a promotion challenge in the Football League, but the Thessaloniki-based organisation is set to play in the lowly Gamma Ethniki in the 2019/2020 season.
It’s all gone horribly wrong for Iraklis. Having earned promotion from the Gamma Ethniki in the 2017/2018 season, Iraklis harboured realistic hope of returning to the Super League for the 2019/2020 campaign, but it didn’t happen. A thoroughly disappointing season saw Iraklis languish in 11th place of the Football League, failing to even be promoted to the Super League 2.
Initially, it was thought that Iraklis would play in the Football League in the 2019/2020 season, but all of the latest indications are implying that the club will participate in the Gamma Ethniki.
Tom Papadopoulos, who became the Iraklis chairman in 2018, has seen his relationship with the club go completely sour. Papadopoulos failed in a reported attempt to merge Iraklis and Volos so that the former could play in the Super League again (Volos were champions of the 2018/2019 Football League).
After realising it wasn’t possible to play in the Super League, Iraklis then tried to merge with either Apollon Larissa or Karaiskakis of the Super League 2, but both of those clubs rejected their proposal. Football League club Triglia also refused to merge with Iraklis.
In the end, Iraklis eventually managed to find a way to play football in the 2019/2020 season, as Aris Palaiochori agreed to merge with the Thessaloniki club. Iraklis are now expected to participate in the Gamma Ethniki.
Iraklis last participated in the Super League in the 2016/2017 season.
