Irodotos will be making their first appearance in Greece’s second tier for the first time in 36 years after receiving promotion to the Football League from the Gamma Ethniki. The Cretan club were granted promotion after a court decision by EPO’s Disciplinary Committee handed Asteras Amaliadas a five point deduction for fan violence during their matchday 4 clash against Irodotos in the promotion playoffs.
The match between the two teams was cut short after fan violence broke out at the Municipal stadium in Amaliada, resulting in injuries to the visiting Irodotos players. The incidents proved to be detrimental to Asteras Amaliadas’ promotion efforts as they failed to gain promotion despite finishing second in Group B of the Gamma Ethniki playoffs.
The side from Amaliada finished the promotion playoffs with nine points from five matches, not taking into account the match against Irodotos. However, EPO’s Disciplinary Committee handed Asteras Amaliadas a 0:3 forfeit defeat for the match against Irodotos and an additional five point deduction to their point’s tally. This verdict saw Asteras Amaliadas drop down to 4 points while Irodotos, who had just four points from their 5 matches (not taking into account the match against Asteras Amaliadas) moved up to seven points with their 0:3 victory on paper. Asteras Amaliadas are expected to appeal the decision but the chances of this decision being overturned are slim to none.
With the new standings, Irodotos claim second place in Group B of the Gamma Ethniki promotion playoffs with seven points and Asteras Amaliadas finish third with four points. Ethnikos finish bottom of the group with four points while Aittitos Spaton claimed top spot with 11 points and will play in next season’s Football League along with Irodotos.
From Group A, Iraklis and NFC Volos gained promotion to the second division.
