Kone signs with new A-League franchise Western Melbourne
Former Greek international Panagiotis Kone inked a marquee deal with new A-League franchise Western Melbourne.
The 31-year-old attacking midfielder penned a two-year deal with the franchise and became their first player signing ahead of their first season in the top flight. Having represented Greece on 28 occasions, including appearances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the talented midfielder has been without a club this season, after his contract was terminated by reigning Greek Super League champions AEK Athens.
“I am looking forward to playing a big part for Western Melbourne on and off the field,’ Kone said. “I am excited to meet my new teammates but also the great Greek community in Melbourne.’
Kone was linked with a move to Australia last year, with reports suggesting he was considering a move to join National Premier League club South Melbourne FC. Western Melbourne will send a strength and conditioning coach to Greece later this month to help assist Kone in his preparations before arriving in Melbourne in June.
