Late goal hands Aris win over Lamia
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 16
|Aris||1 - 0||Lamia|
An added time free-kick from Javier Matilla got Aris out of jail on Monday as Savvas Pantelidis’ side grabbed three points in a 1-0 win over Lamia which had seemed unlikely during an instantly forgettable contest.
Playing in their first league match of 2019, Aris struggled to inspire but managed to win thanks to 30-year-old Spanish midfielder Matilla, whose dead ball effort in the 93rd minute, which was the last kick of the game, proving decisive.
The result sees Aris return to winning ways after a run of three games without a victory - a feat which sees them move up to seventh place.
Lamia, who scored a 1-0 first leg win over Panathinaikos in a Round of 16 clash in midweek, proved a difficult opponent for Aris, with the Salonica club finding it difficult to create chances.
Makis Chavos’ men remain down in 14th place after this result, however, and are just three points clear of the bottom two.
