Lavrio’s entire squad found the scoresheet as the Miners thrashed Trikala, while Stefan Moody’s record performance wasn’t enough to see Retyhmno slowdown Koroivos as Matchday 15 in the Greek Basket League tipped-off.
Kolossos clash with Panionios in Rhodes led the slate of Saturday’s slate of games with the home side emerging 70-62 victors at the final buzzer. TJ Bray notched 21 points as Kolossos did most of their damage in the first half to take a 10-point lead into the second frame. Panionios, led by Zisis Sarikopoulos’ 11 points, failed to recover in the second half with both teams playing out the final two quarters with a combined 42 points in the entire second half.
In an equally tight encounter, Promitheas got the better of Gymnastikos in an 89-81 win at the Larissa Neapolis Indoor Hall. After a tight three quarters, Promitheas stormed out to victory with a 28-17 run in the fourth quarter as the Patras-based club claimed their second straight win to keep in the hunt for third place in the standings. Christos Saloustros led Promitheas with 18 points, while Nikos Gkikas contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Nondas Papantoniou notched 21 points in a losing effort for Gymnastikos, who have now lost back-to-back games and sit just two points up on the relegation zone.
In Lavrio, Xavier Thames’ 30-point effort and a double-double from John Fields (15 points, 10 rebounds) weren’t enough to keep Trikala from an ugly 117-87 loss to free-scoring Lavrio. Tony Meier notched 19 points as every player found the scoresheet for Lavrio, with 6 players reaching double-digits. The win sees Lavrio sneak into second place, one point above Olympiacos who clash with Kymis on Sunday.
In the late tip-off on Saturday, Koroivos edged Rethymno in a double-overtime thriller as Stefan Moody’s 44 points were made just a footnote on the night. Rethymno needed a massive comeback in the fourth quarter to force overtime, while both sides couldn’t be separated in the first overtime period. A 16-11 run by Koroivos would prove to be the difference in the second overtime frame, with Marcus Posley (21 points) the main offensive force for Koroivos on the night.
