Apollon hosted AEL Limassol at the Tsirion Stadio in Limassol with much more than simply bragging rights within the city on the line. A win for either would give them the lead atop the league standings. Things almost started badly for Apollon as Kevin Bru turned it over to Ruben Jurado at midfield, but Jurado fired his shot straight at Bruno Vale. Jurado had another chance not long after, with a better strike, but the increased difficulty was no match for Vale, and he made the save. Nils Teixeira had a shot that deflected, but Vale adjusted to the deflection and kept it out. AEL had the better of the first half play, but neither side could find the back of the net and there was no score at the half.
Apollon had more urgency in the second half. Joao Pedro played in a cross looking for Anton Maglica, but Patryk Procek did well to punch it out. Andreas Makris set up Marko Adamovic in a great position, but Adamovic absolutely whiffed on his attempt and the entire opportunity went by the wayside. The best attempt came towards the end of the match as Mustapha Carayol made a great individual effort, dribbling through the entire AEL defense from midfield in on goal. However, at the end of that run his powerful strike was saved by Procek and the AEL defense recovered to clear the rebound. After that, the fate of the match was sealed, a 0:0 draw in the Limassol Derby. AEL for their part did put themselves level on points with league leaders APOEL, and Apollon inched to within a point of both APOEL and AEL, but this might have been the best possible result for APOEL, as they have a game in hand on both.
Nea Salamina hosted Anorthosis at the Stadio Ammochostos in Larnaca. Not only was this a matchup that features two clubs that represent Famagusta but temporarily call Larnaca home, but also an important match to solidify their standing in the top 6 for a playoff spot. Salamina brought the early pressure, a header from Daniel Sikorski was stopped by Dimitris Demetriou. Instead Anorthosis had the breakthrough at the other end. Michal Duris crossed for Nikos Englezou and he blasted a stunning strike past Robert Veselovsky for the opening goal in the 27th minute. Kinglsey Onuegbu got a touch on a shot that Demetriou had to be alert to. Once again, it was a different story the other way as Gordon Schildenfeld took a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar, then hit the goal line, and eventually bounced in despite Veselovsky’s best efforts. A 38th minute goal for Schildenfeld and it was 2:0 for Anorthosis at the half.
In the second half, Salamina did their best to try to get back in the match. Thiago actually tried to score directly off a corner, but Demetriou was ready for it and made the save. Thiago later played a free kick in for Kostas Mintikkis, but he skied his shot over the net. In the end, Anorthosis hung on for the 2:0 away win over Nea Salamina. Anorthosis improves to 4th place with 3 valuable points to greatly fortify their chances to finish in the top 6 and into the playoff group. Salamina are in 6th, they are 4 points ahead of Omonoia, but Omonoia now have a game in hand to cut into that margin.
