In Tuesday’s Super League Board of Directors meeting, Minas Lysandrou was voted as the league’s new president. The CEO and Vice President A of AEK was elected with an 8:6 vote beating out PAOK’s representative Makis Gagatsis.

Lysandrou was backed by the votes of rival clubs Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in addition to AEK, Apollon Smyrnis, Aris, OFI, Lamia, and Panionios. Makis Gagatsis received votes from PAOK, Larissa, Atromitos,  Xanthi, Levadiakos, and Panetolikos. PAS Giannina and the Hellenic Football Federation voided their vote while Atromitos and Asteras Tripolis proposed to postpone the election, which was not accepted, with the latter abstaining from the voting process.

Lysandrou will be the Super League’s 13th president since its formation in 2006 and will replace Vaggelis Batagiannis, who resigned from his position last week. He is the second AEK man to be elected president after Nikos Thanopoulos in 2009/10 and will serve his term through 2020.

In his first remarks as president, Lysandrou thanked those that voted for him, but also those that did not vote for him. He expressed the importance of creating the best possible Super League and that all parties must unite together to accomplish this. He also had good things to say about his opponent, Makis Gagatsis, stating he is a good friend of his and that he is certain that he will support his efforts as president. Lysandrou’s message is one that points in the right direction of league unity.

Before the vote, heated exchanges took place between the various parties present. Most notably, Olympiacos Director of Communications Kostas Karapapas leashed a verbal attack on candidate Makis Gagatsis on various matters, including incidents that took place between PAOK and Olympiacos in Thessaloniki both this season and last season.
