Magnificent Maria makes second round in NYC
Greece’s Maria Sakkari got off to a perfect start at the US Open, defeating Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-1 6-0 in the opening round.
Sakkari, the 30th seed in the tournament, had won both of her previous meetings against the Italian world number 48 in straight sets. This included a first round match in Cincinnati just two weeks ago. Nevertheless, the Italian was considered one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the draw, and had recently made finals at tour events in Washington D.C., and the Bronx within the past month.
The match began with both players holding serve. However, Sakkari would go on to dominate by winning the next 11 games for a comfortable 6-1 6-0 victory. The Greek saved all four of the break points that she faced, and was on and off the court in less than an hour.
Sakkari will now face Chinese qualifier Shuai Peng (world number 167) in the second round on Wednesday. The two players have never met before. It must be noted that Peng is a former world number 14 and was a semi-finalist at the US Open back in 2014. The winner will face either world number two Ashleigh Barty of Australia, or American Lauren Davis, in the third round. Sakkari will be looking to reach the US Open third round for the second time in her career, after previously having done so back in 2017.
Sakkari will also be competing in the doubles event in New York, teaming up with Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic. They will face the Russian-Kazakh duo of Natela Dzalamidze and Elena Rybakina in the first round.
