Magnificent start for Maria
Greece’s Maria Sakkari beat American Anna Tatishvili 6-0 6-1 in the first round of the French Open.
Sakkari, the 29th seed, hit nine aces in her win. Tatishvili, a former top 50 player, came into the event unranked as this was her first competitive match in 19 months. The American showed her rustiness from the get-go, as Sakkari was in control from start to finish.
Sakkari will next face world number 42 Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the second round on Thursday. Both players reached the third round here last year, and this will be their third head-to-head meeting. Coincidentally, both of their previous matches took place at Grand Slam tournaments. Sakkari defeated Siniakova at Wimbledon in 2017, and the Czech beat the Greek at the 2018 Australian Open. The winner of this match will face either current world number one Naomi Osaka of Japan, or former world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, in the third round.
Sakkari will also be competing in the doubles tournament in Paris, alongside Australia’s Daria Gavrilova. They will play their first round match against Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig and American Shelby Rogers.
