A strong, powerful and well-organised defence is the hallmark of many successful teams over the years – if you do not concede goals, you get results. Defending may not be the most glamorous aspect of football but it is vitally important, and just like their counterparts higher up the pitch, defenders are attracting sky high transfer fees in the modern football market.

Established Greek international Kostas Manolas has joined elite category as his sky high 36 million EUR transfer from Roma to Napoli ranks 21st on the all-time list. Napoli will be hoping Manolas forms a strong partnership in the heart of defence alongside Kalidou Koulibaly, who is also powerful, aggressive, strong in the air, great with the ball at his feet, and has a sound awareness of his position.

While Aaron Wan-Bissaka has attracted the limelight so far during this summer transfer window, courtesy of his mammoth 50 million GBP move from Crystal Palace to Manchester United, Manolas’ move is the twelfth biggest move this summer.

Predictably, Dutch colossal Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool sits first on the list for defenders. Here is the list of the all-time highest fees for defenders – centre backs and fullbacks.

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool (from Southampton) – 84.5 million EUR
