With Roma requiring a third marker to progress on the away goals rule in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, the 26-year old centre-back firmly flicked a header into the far corner to instantly write himself into the history books.
Overall, Manolas has now scored four goals in Champions League matches during his career, becoming the top scoring Greek defender in the history of the competition. It’s certainly an achievement which is worth celebrating, alongside the historic Roma victory. This was only the third time when a team recovered from a three-goal deficit in the first leg to eventually go through to the next round in the Champions League, as Roma followed in Deportivo’s (1:4, 4:0 against AC Milan in 2004) and Barcelona’s (0:4, 6:1 against PSG in 2017) footsteps.
Manolas has made 63 appearances in European competitions, with only Georgios Anatolakis (67), Loukas Vyntra (72) and Giannis Goumas (76) boasting more continental matches among Greek players.
Following the final whistle, an emotional Manolas was photographed seemingly in tears on the Roma bench all alone, a picture capturing the pure emotion and passion which the Greek exudes.
