PAS Giannina had taken the lead, but two goals from midfielder Giannis Masouras helped AEL grab an unlikely victory in Ioannina.
Larissa should have opened the scoring in the first few minutes, but Radomir Milosavljevic contrived to smack the post when clean through. Not long later, Giannina punished AEL for that miss. Seconds after seeing an attempt cleared off the line, Spanish forward Pedro Conde rose highest to node a pinpoint cross into the left corner.
Nevertheless, AEL had the perfect response. A loose ball fell to Giannis Masouras in the box, who slotted beyond home goalkeeper Konstantinos Peristeridis. AEL continued to hold the initiative as time rolled on, eventually stunning their opponents at the start of the second half. Adnan Aganovic’s header cannoned off the woodwork, but Masouras gleefully tucked the rebound in for his second of the game.
Searching for an equaliser, Conde missed the target at close range, before Evripidis Giakos had a goal correctly disallowed for offside. AEL calmly saw the match out, taking a slender advantage with them back to Larissa for the second leg.
