Mastour leaves Lamia after disappointing stint
When signing for Lamia in September 2018, young Moroccan attacker Hachim Mastour arrived with a big reputation after being on the books of AC Milan, but his contract with the Greek club has now been cancelled.
It turned out to be a thoroughly disappointing stay in Greece for 20-year-old Mastour. A naturally gifted player, Mastour was on the wish list of many major European clubs when a young teenager, and he eventually joined the AC Milan academy in 2012. Mastour subsequently spent spells on loan at Malaga and Zwolle, but last September, his deal with Milan ended and he transferred to Lamia.
Taking into account his wonderful technical ability and huge potential, Mastour was expected to take the next step at senior level with Lamia, but it simply didn’t happen. Overall, he played in a mere six matches across all competitions for Lamia, contributing with just the one assist without scoring any goals. The Hellenic Football Federation confirmed that Mastour has now left Lamia after his contract was mutually terminated.
Lamia have actually wanted to cancel his contract for quite some weeks. In the Christmas break, Mastour travelled to Italy to recover from an injury, but he didn’t return to Lamia when the holiday season ended. Mastour didn’t ask Lamia for permission to remain in Italy and he did not get in contact with anyone from the organisation’s management.
In February, Lamia tried to scrap his contract, but Mastour refused to cooperate. Reports suggested Lamia were ready to take the issue to court, but in the end, Mastour began speaking to the club again and the two have now mutually terminated his contract.
Mastour is now free to sign with whoever he likes. At only 20 years of age, the world is still at his feet, but his discipline has to improve if he’s to make use of his unquestioned talent.
