Since signing for Arsenal in January from Super League outfit PAS Giannina, the talented centre-back has spent the majority of his time in London playing with the club’s under 23 side, impressing with some composed performances. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who is known to be an admirer of Mavropanos’ capabilities, handed the 21-year old his senior Premier League debut in a headline clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Despite competing against a top quality opponent boasting the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, Greek defender Mavropanos played a superb match in Manchester, rarely putting a foot wrong and keeping Manchester United’s tricky attackers quiet throughout the 90 minutes. Arsenal did lose the game 1:2 after conceding a last gasp goal, but everyone was talking about Mavropanos.
Following the final whistle, Mavropanos earned high praise from Arsenal head coach Wenger, as the Frenchman congratulated the defender with his successful debut and excellent game. On Twitter, experienced club goalkeeper Petr Cech pointed out Mavropanos’ brilliant play.
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry also had his say on Mavropanos, noting the centre-back’s clever tactics against imposing striker Romelu Lukaku and his intelligent positioning.
The Gunners revealed that Mavropanos became the 200th Arsenal player to receive his debut by outgoing manager Arsene Wenger.
