In order for Marseille to qualify for the 2018/2019 Champions League, they had to win and hope that Lyon drop points, but the latter beat Nice 3:2 at home to claim third place in the Ligue 1 table. As a result, Marseille have to settle for fourth spot and UEFA Europa League football, despite trailing Lyon by just the one point.
With the score at 1:0 in Marseille’s favour against Amiens after 18 minutes, the opposition goalkeeper could only parry a powerful header directly into the path of Kostas Mitroglou, who gleefully slotted the ball into the gaping net at point blank range.
Mitroglou was eventually substituted on 71 minutes, as Marseille held on to earn a 2:1 victory in the final Ligue 1 match. Overall, Mitroglou scored nine league goals in 19 appearances.
