Nightmare Away Record Haunting Panathinaikos

The 2-1 weekend loss to PAS Giannina in Giannina led to the Greens remaining winless on the road for the 11th straight time this season as Pedro Conde stole the show. It was the first time the hosts won at Zosimades since the 28th of October 2017. The unusual record has clearly frustrated Marinos Ouzounidis and fans alike as no one can put a finger on what has been missing away from Leoforos.

The horrible streak prompted Ouzounidis to change formations for the game in Giannina with 3 defenders, as opposed to the standard flat back 4. Several other formations have been tried as well in previous games.

A nightmare run of results like this is unthinkable for a club the size of Panathinaikos, but they find themselves staring down the barrel of going an entire season without picking up a single away win. The Greens have to travel to face Larissa, Olympiakos, AEK and Panionios before the season ends.

The upcoming game at Larissa will be tough as the hosts have proved to be a resilient opposition that can punish anyone on their day. A new development has resulted in the probability of Panathinaikos travelling to the Port to face Eternal RIvals Olympiakos behind closed doors.

Only minnows Kerkyra and Apollon Smyrni are yet to taste victory away from their respective homes this season, with the Trifylli aiming to avoid breaking an unwanted record from the 1980-81 season where the club failed to win an away game in 13 attempts.

Panathinaikos has now in fact had more losses than draws away from Leoforos this season. The 6 losses are: 2-1 vs PAS Giannina, 3-2 vs Levadiakos, 1-0 vs Asteras Tripolis, 2-0 vs Panetolikos, 4-0 vs PAOK and 1-0 vs Kerkyra. The 5 draws are: 1-1 vs Xanthi, 1-1 vs Lamia, 1-1 vs Platanias, 1-1 vs Atromitos and 0-0 vs Apollon Smyrni.
