Nikopolidis announces departure from Greece U21
In a surprise turn of events, Antonis Nikopolidis has left his post as the head coach of the under 21 Greek national team, announcing his departure via Instagram.
On Friday morning, Nikopolidis released this following post on his official Instagram account, revealing that he is stepping down from his role as the head coach of the under 21 Greek national team:
The news comes as a surprise for many. Last week, Nikopolidis oversaw two matches at the helm of the under 21 Greek national team, with the side defeating Georgia (3:0) in a friendly and San Marino (5:0) in the first game of the qualifying phase for the 2021 UEFA European Championship. However, in what appears to be an unplanned development, the 48-year-old has decided to leave the team with immediate effect.
Nikopolidis has been the manager of the under 21 Greek national team since September 2015. He has previously coached in the Olympiacos system after ending his successful playing career which included becoming a European champion in 2004.
