Panathinaikos Salvage a Point

Panionios 1 - 1 Panathinaikos
Ansarifard 71' Villafanzez 90+'3'

An equalizer in second half stoppage time from Villafanez salvaged a point for Panathinaikos against Panionios after a 1-1 draw in Nea Smyrni. It was another troubling performance from the Trifylli as they did not capitalize on Olympiacos’ draw against Kerkyra earlier in the day. Ansarifard opened the scoring for Panionios in the 71st minute.

Panathinaikos put on a horrendous performance in the first half and it seemed that Panionios was the only team present on the pitch. The only good chance of the half fell to the hosts with Vlachodimos denying Oikonomou’s header and the teams went into the break goalless.

Panathinaikos came out better in the second half (couldn't have been worse than the opening half), but was still very problematic on both ends of play. Panionios looked for a goal on the counterattack and they came close in the 63rd minute with Masoud, but once against Vlachodimos was there to deny the opener. Eight minutes later, Masoud’s pass was played behind the Panathinaikos defense and Ansarifard was first to the ball, dribbled passed Vlachodimos, to give Panionios the 1-0 lea. In the final 20-minutes, it was a goalkeeping showdown (mainly from Vlachodimos) as both keepers denied their opponents on multiple occasions. It looked as if Panathinaikos would lose their second consecutive match in the SuperLeague (4th overall), but in the third minute of stoppage time, Villafanez brought down the long ball and with a powerful shot in the bottom corner salvaged a point for Panathinaikos.

After yet another disappointing result, Andrea Stramaccioni's position as manager is in question. The Trifylli failed to cut into Olympiacos’ lead atop the SuperLeague standings after the Erythrolefki drew Kerkyra earlier today. Panionios sit one point behind Panathinaikos and will travel to Crete to play Platanias next weekend while Panathinaikos host PAOK in the weekend derby.
