No podium for Greece in Volos
FIBA U18 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - PLAY-OFFS
Greece miss out on the bronze medal in Volos, conceding a heavy 57-81 defeat to Slovenia in the concluding match of the 2019 FIBA U18 European Championship.
Yesterday, the Greeks were left heartbroken after a disappointing loss to Spain in the semi-finals, and they failed to completely recover from that setback as the players were well beaten by the Slovenians. Until the fourth quarter, Greece had a fighting chance of winning the bronze, but a Slovenian attacking outburst put paid to any hope of finishing on the podium.
Nikos Rogkavopoulos, who enjoyed a superb competition for Greece, tallied 14 points against Slovenia. The 18-year-old AEK representative was subsequently named one of the best five players of the competition.
Spain won gold after defeating Turkey 57-53 in the final.
Greece had a one-point lead at half time. However, Slovenia really got their comeback on course in the third quarter, winning the period 20-16 to take a three-point advantage with 10 minutes remaining.
10 minutes which turned into a nightmare for the hosts.
All of a sudden, Slovenia were utterly dominant on the court, scoring with ease against seemingly tired opponents. 35 points in the fourth frame were comfortably enough to run out 81-57 winners and claim the bronze medal.
