For a number of months, the restructuring plan has been a controversial topic, with many Super League clubs disagreeing with the proposal put forward by Deputy Greek Minister for Culture and Sport, Giorgos Vasiliadis. Recently, the Professional Football Committee of the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) suggested that Vasiliadis keeps 16 clubs in the Super League for the 2019/2020 season, but that won’t happen.

Following a meeting between Vasiliadis, the Super League, Football League and the EPO, it was confirmed that 14 teams will participate in the 2019/2020 Super League. 12 clubs will play in the Super League 2 - the new second tier of Greek football - while 14 teams compete in the Football League. A legislation has been created in order for the Super League 2 to be founded.

Representatives of the EPO and Super League had made one last attempt to stop the Super League participant list from being reduced from 16 to 14, but in response, Vasiliadis revealed that funding would be cut if the amount of teams in the championship remained the same.

The clubs in the final three positions of the 2018/2019 Super League suffer immediate relegation to the Super League 2, with the Football League winner earning direct promotion to the top flight. The 13th placed Super League team will play against the second best Football League club in a relegation/promotion playoff.

“We are proceeding with the restructuring just like we planned,” stated Vasiliadis after meeting with EPO president Evangelos Grammenos. “This has been confirmed today. The relevant decisions had already been taken last summer, and in accordance with those agreements, we will proceed with the restructuring plan as scheduled. 14 teams will be in the Super League, 12 in the Super League 2 and 14 in the Football League.”
