OFFICIAL: AEK docked three points for fan chaos

In a huge blow to reigning Greek champions AEK Athens, the Super League Disciplinary Body has imposed a three point deduction for the chaos witnessed in a recent derby match against Olympiacos.

Watch LIVE from AGONAsport: Greece - Hungary, UEFA Nations League matchday 3 derby on Friday, October 12th. Details here.

At half time in the 1:1 draw against Olympiacos at the Olympic Stadium, a section of the AEK supporters engaged in a conflict with riot police, hurling firecrackers in their direction outside of the arena and setting a number of flares alight along the periphery of the OAKA. In an attempt to send the fans back to their seats, tear gas was used, and the situation eventually calmed down.

However, in a massive dent to AEK’s hopes of defending their Super League crown, the Disciplinary Body docked three points from the standings and instructed the club to play two matches behind closed doors. There is also a fine of 73,250 euros.

Here is the official statement:

“For abusive language used by the fans and their behaviour at the match on 07/10/2018, there is a total fine of 73,250 euros. AEK FC also received a penalty of two (2) matches behind closed doors and the removal of three (3) points from the standings of the current season.”

As a result, AEK now drop to joint fifth place of the Super League with 10 points after six rounds, trailing the leading pair of PAOK and Atromitos by six points. The Athenians will host Aris (October 27) and Atromitos (November 11) without the support of their fans.

The Kitrinomavri are expected to appeal the decision.
