OFI Crete took another huge step towards promotion to the Super League, defeating nearest challengers Panachaiki 3:0 in Patras.
This match was one of Panachaiki’s final chances to put pressure on the leading pack, but the Patras outfit were thrashed by a motivated OFI side. Panachaiki now only have one win in their previous five Football League fixtures, as their promotion bid has dramatically come off the rails.
Visitors OFI, enjoying an amazing ten-match winning streak, broke the deadlock within fifteen minutes. Panachaiki conceded a penalty when Nikos Boutzikos’ arm blocked a set-piece, allowing Dimitris Manos to stroke the resulting spot-kick into the left corner beyond the goalkeeper’s despairing dive.
Vasilis Koutsianikoulis doubled OFI’s advantage seven minutes later with a wonderful strike, curling the ball into the net from distance with the help of a slight deflection. The Cretans then put the game out of sight before half-time, with hitman Manos scoring when clean through on the counterattack.
Panagiotis Moraitis should have got Panachaiki on the board in the second half, but he contrived to bundle the ball wide at point blank range. Nevertheless, OFI calmly held on to their lead, claiming an important 3:0 win in Patras.
OFI now lead the Football League with 60 points, however Aris can draw level if they beat Doxa Dramas on Sunday. Panachaiki sit in third place, 13 points behind OFI.
