OFI hold Aris to frustrating draw in Thessaloniki
GREEK FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MATCHDAY 8
|Aris||0 - 0||OFI|
OFI Crete claimed a priceless 0:0 draw in Thessaloniki, becoming the first team to deny Aris a win in the 2017/2018 Football League season.
Coming off the back of a disappointing 1:2 loss to Panachaiki last weekend, the last thing OFI needed was an away game against Aris Thessaloniki. Nevertheless, despite playing against the Football League’s top club, OFI put in a spirited display.
Aris registered eleven shots and boasted 61% of possession, however the hosts failed to make their advantage count. Vangelis Platellas came the closest to finding a way through during a tight first half, fizzing a driven shot wide of the left post when inside the area.
The home team increased the intensity in the second 45, with Babis Pavlidis stinging the goalkeeper’s palms with a rising effort. Aris should really have taken the lead on the hour mark, but defender Hugo Sousa contrived to head off target at point blank range. OFI held firm though, almost snatching an unlikely win at the death. A looping half-volley from long distance almost caught Aris goalkeeper Georgios Kantimiris out, but he tipped the ball over with his fingertips.
With the point gained in the 0:0 draw, OFI keep third spot in the Football League. Aris sit in first place, three points clear of nearest challengers Panachaiki.
