On Saturday, AEK released this following statement:

“AEK FC is delighted to announce the signing of Portuguese international striker Nelson Miguel Castro Oliveira from Norwich City. The 28-year-old forward, who was named the “Portuguese Cantona” at the beginning of his career, has signed a two-year contract with our team until June 30, 2021.”

Oliveira commented on the transfer:

“It was difficult to make the final decision to come here, but AEK showed persistence and desire to sign me. I am very grateful for the efforts which they made to take me to Greece, and on the pitch I will try to repay their faith. The fact that AEK have a Portuguese coach certainly helped me make the decision to sign for this club. AEK is a big team which was competing in the UEFA Champions League last year. I think that our target is to win the championship and I want to make my teammates, the administration and the fans happy. I thank the supporters for the love which they have already showed me.”

Reports had previously stated that AEK paid Norwich around one million euros to sign Oliveira on a permanent basis.

Last year, Oliveira was frozen out of the Norwich team for the first half of the 2018/2019 season, subsequently joining Reading on loan in January. The injury-hit striker managed to score three goals in 10 English Championship appearances for Reading.

Oliveira transferred to Norwich City from Benfica in 2016. After progressing through the Benfica youth system, Oliveira spent time on loan at Rio Ave, Pacos de Ferreira, Deportivo, Rennes, Swansea City and Nottingham Forest. Oliveira scored 31 goals in a grand total of 103 Championship matches.

Lucas Boye has been linked with AEK in recent days.

Initially, it seemed there was little chance of Boye returning to AEK for the upcoming 2019/2020 season, but Torino FC have now informed the 23-year-old Argentinian winger that he is not a part of their plans. Rumours have suggested that AEK might opt to make a move for Boye.

It’s worth pointing out that Boye’s Torino contract is due to expire in the summer of 2020.

During the 2018/2019 campaign, Boye competed in 36 matches for AEK, scoring six goals and dishing out two assists. Transfermarkt rates his value at 1.5 million.

This evening, AEK hosted Volos NFC in a friendly match at an empty Olympic Stadium in Athens, emerging victorious by a score of 2:0 thanks to goals from Francisco Geraldes and Viktor Klonaridis.

AEK will discover their opponents in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League in Monday’s draw.
