Olympiacos put Wednesday’s scare against Kymis behind them as the Piraeus giants cruised to an 88-67 win to secure progress to the semifinals of the Greek Basket League playoffs.
Although they didn’t etch a massive lead in the first quarter, Olympiacos flexed their offensive might in the second half to secure a 2-0 series sweep with a dominant second half in which they outscored Kymis 48-30.
Janis Strelnieks tallied 16 points to lead Olympiacos on the evening, while Vangelis Mantzaris chipped in with 13 points and 6 assists on a night that Vasslis Spanoulis (4 points) was kept quiet.
Thaddeus McFadden led Kymis with 15 points while Lenzel Smith nearly notched a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds on the night.
Olympiacos took an early eight-point lead in the first quarter as the Erythrolefki led 21-13 at the end of the first frame.
Kymis, who rallied from a 21-point deficit on Wednesday to tie the game late on Wednesday night, threatened to make this another nervy night for Ioannis Sfairopoulos and company as the home side pushed-back with a 24-19 run in the second frame.
With their lead down to just three points to start the second half Olympiacos’ defense upped the pressured on Kymis as the home side struggled on the offensive end after halftime.
A 23-12 by Olympiacos blew the game wide-open in the third quarter before the Piraeus giants further padded their lead before the final buzzer with a 25-18 run in the fourth quarter.
Promitheas hold on to sweep Lavrio
Promitheas completed a sweep of Lavrio to progress to the semifinals after the Patras-based side staved-off Lavrio’s late comeback for a 79-77 win at a closed Lavrio Indoor Hall.
Mouhammad Faye led Promitheas with 19 points and 8 rebounds while Oleksandry added 18 points and 8 rebounds for the visitors.
Antwaine Wiggins was immense for Lavrio as he tallied 25 points and 9 rebounds for a near double-double performance, while McKenzie Moore added 22 points for the Miners in the loss.
After a narrow first quarter in Lavrio, Promitheas took a commanding lead into halftime thanks to a 22-13 run in the second frame blowing the game wide open at 44-32 by halftime.
A tight third quarter didn’t provide much threat to Promitheas’ hopes of a sweep, but the Patras-based club came under fire in the fourth quarter as Lavrio’s late pressure threatened to stun Promitheas.
In the end, however, a 21-14 run by Lavrio in the fourth quarter proved to be too little, too late as the home side couldn’t recover from the early deficit en route to a first round exit.
After making history with their first-ever berth in the Basket League playoffs, Promitheas have added to that historical run with their first-ever series win. The Patras-based club will now look to add to that run of success when they clash with Olympiacos in the semifinals.
