After frustrating performances on the continental stage for both Aris and Olympiacos, only the latter was able to rebound on Sunday as both sides turned their focus to domestic duties.
Travelling to Crete for the early tip-off on Sunday, Aris’ struggles were compounded by an 80-73 defeat to Rethymno.
Still without the services of Giannis Athinaiou, Aris looked to be in good shape for a bounce-back on the island with Eleftherios Bochoridis doing his best to steer his side to victory courtesy of his 21 points.
Despite Bochoridis’ best efforts, a late Aris meltdown saw the Thessaloniki outfit give-up a fourth quarter lead as Rethymno went on a 27-18 run in the final frame. The Cretan Kings, led by Shaquille Goodwin’s 19-point outing, snuck into the final play-off spot for the time-being with the win.
Olympiacos rebounded from a blowout loss against Baskonia with an emphatic win over Gymnastikos, while Aris’ trip to Crete didn’t go as planned in Sunday’s action in the Greek Basket League.
In the later tip-off on Sunday, Olympiacos bounced-back from Friday’s EuroLeague rout at the hands of Baskonia with a landslide win over Gymnastikos at the Peace & Friendship Stadium. Olympiacos found their scoring touch that ever eluded the Piraeus giants in Spain on Friday night as the Erythrolefki cruised to a 100-69 win over to extend Gymnastikos’ struggles. Brian Roberts led Olympiacos scorers with 17 points, with the Piraeus outfit assuming control early en route to reaching their first century of points in a Basket League fixture this season.
Roeland Schaftenaar led the charge for Gymnastikos with 16 points, but with his side trailing by 27 at halftime the climb for the Thessalian side was just far too steep as the Larissa-based outfit slipped further out of the play-off picture.
