lympiacos came back from two sets down, but it was not enough as they would come up just short in the fifth set against Bursa in the first leg of the CEV Women’s Challenge Cup final..
Olympiacos are keen to avenge their loss to the Turkish side from last year’s final, as are their fans, who filled the stands in Piraeus and provided a great atmosphere for this first leg. The Erythrolefkes got off to a great start, taking a 10-5 lead early on in the first set. The Turks would respond, coming back to level the set at 12-12. The Turks would carry this momentum throughout the rest of the set, as they soon found themselves ahead 15-21. Eventually, the Turks would wrap up the set by a score of 17-25.
Bursa’s hot streak would continue in the second set, as they took a 4-8 lead early on and later extended this to 10-16. However, Olympiacos would fight back and level the set at 21-21. Despite this impressive comeback, the Turks would edge out Olympiacos 23-25 to take the second set.
The Greeks would absolutely dominate the third set, taking a 7-1 lead early on. They would continue this momentum throughout the set, which they won easily by a score of 25-7. In the fourth set, Bursa took a 10-15 lead and seemed to be heading to victory. The hosts would have the last say though, as they would turn it around and tie it up at 16-16. From 18-18, Olympiacos would win seven consecutive points to claim the set 25-18 and send the match to a fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Turks stormed to a 5-9 lead and were once again very close to the finish line. Unsurprisingly, Olympiacos once again mounted a comeback, and minimized the deficit to 12-13. In the end though, Bursa would edge the hosts 13-15 to win the match 3-2.
The second leg will be played in Turkey on April 11, with Olympiacos needing a win at the very minimum in order to keep their title hopes alive.
