The Erythrolefki, winners of the 2017-18 LEN Champions League, traveled to Hungary to face 2017-18 LEN Euro Cup winners Ferencvaros in the final of the LEN Super Cup. The Greeks were hoping to win their second Super Cup title in club history, but the energetic Hungarian crowd pulled their team to victory on penalties.
After going down 1-0 early on, Olympiacos would rally back to take a 2-4 lead going into halftime. In the second half, Ferencvaros came out strong and turned the game around, going up 7-5. Olympiacos would eventually level the score at 7-7. Emmanouil Mylonakis nearly won it at the end for the Greeks, but would hit the post, sending the game into penalties. Misses from Paulo Obradovic and captain Ioannis Fountoulis would see the Hungarians take the shootout 4-2.
Georgios Dervisis was Olympiacos’ top goal scorer with three goals. Konstantinos Genidounias and 19-year-old sensation Dimitrios each had two goals. Surprisingly, Fountoulis, the MVP of the 2017-18 LEN Champions League and the top scorer in both the 2017 World Championships and 2018 European Championships, did not net any goals.
