Last season, Olympiacos suffered relegation to the second tier as a result of forfeiting matches against Panathinaikos, with the Erythrolefki subsequently revealing that only their youth players will compete in domestic tournaments. The senior Olympiacos team will only participate in the EuroLeague this season.

On Wednesday, the Olympiacos B team - which will play in the 2019/2020 Second Division instead of the seniors - conceded a 91-76 defeat to Anatolia at home in the Greek Cup. The Olympiacos B side consists of academy prospects.

The damage was done in the first period for Olympiacos, as Anatolia took a firm grip of the tie by opening up a 26-14 lead. In the second quarter, the hosts reduced the deficit by three points, but Anatolia managed to win the remaining two frames to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

Alexandros Nikolaidis and Nikos Arsenopoulos, who both starred for junior Greek national teams at international competitions during the summer, played in the game. They registered seven and three points respectively.

“We are unhappy with the result, we wanted to win,” stated Olympiacos B head coach Dimitris Tsaldaris. “After training well, the players were ready. However, the experience of the Anatolia players took its toll, they have long been competing at this level. They made the right decisions during the decisive moments. Every time when we seemed to be getting back into the match, something negative happened. We need more experience.”

Olympiacos B will now prepare for the start of the 2019/2020 Second Division.
