Olympiacos defeated PAOK 3:0 set and swept their opponents in the best of five Finals series to reclaim Greece’s volleyball crown.
The Erythrolefki played in front of a sold out crowd at the Melina Merkouri Indoor Volleyball stadium knowing that a win would give the hosts this year’s Greek VolleyLeague title. Olympiacos were the clear favorites going into game three of the VolleyLeague Finals series after defeating PAOK in games one and two.
The opening set was closely fought and despite PAOK pulling ahead 20-21, Olympiacos prevailed 25-22 to take a 1-0 set lead. The following set saw Olympiacos take an early lead and the hosts kept a comfortable 2-3 point advantage until the end, which finished in favor of the Erythrolefki 25-21. The third and final set was well balanced up until the midway point when Olympiacos went ahead 15-11 then 20-17 to eventually take the set 25-20.
The win gives Olympiacos their 28th league title in team history, the most out of any other Greek club, and their first since 2014, ending PAOK’s 3-year dominance in the league. The new league champions finished the season with a perfect 30-0 record with 22 regular season wins and 8 wins in the playoffs. The first and last team to finish with a perfect league record was Iraklis back in the 2006/07 season.
