Olympiacos to play Krasnodar in UCL playoffs
Olympiacos will play FC Krasnodar in the qualification playoffs of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League.
Having lost the first leg 1:0 at home, Krasnodar were expected to suffer elimination against FC Porto, but the dangerous Russians sprung a major surprise with an impressive 3:2 victory on Portuguese soil.
In a blistering start, the slick Russian Premier League side struck three times in a stunning first half, as Tonny Vilhena opened the scoring in the third minute before Magomed-Shapi Suleymanov hit the target twice in quick succession.
As expected, Porto came roaring back in an exciting second half, scoring twice through Ze Luis and Luis Diaz. One more goal would have taken Porto through, but thanks to some solid defending, Krasnodar held on for dear life and progressed on the away goals rule. It’s worth noting that Krasnodar have former Panathinaikos hero Marcus Berg on their books.
Krasnodar are making their Champions League debut. The Bulls currently occupy fifth place of the Russian Premier League after five rounds, three points behind reigning champions and leaders Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Olympiacos had earlier defeated Basaksehir 2:0 at the Karaiskakis Stadium to seal a 3:0 aggregate triumph.
The two games will take place on August 20/21 and 27/28.
