Omonia Nicosia claimed a thrilling 2:1 victory at Anorthosis Famagusta in the Cypriot First Division, producing a remarkable late fightback to take all of the spoils.
It looked as though Omonia were heading for a disappointing defeat against Anorthosis, but two last-gasp goals from English forward Matt Derbyshire turned the match on its head.
In a tight first half, it was hosts Anorthosis who had the majority of promising goalscoring opportunities. Omonia goalkeeper John Alvbage did well to punch Ruben Rayo’s swinging free-kick clear, but he injured himself in the process and had to be replaced by Andreas Christodoulou. Michal Duris had a glorious chance to give Anorthosis the lead on 39 minutes, slotting wide when clean through.
Eventually, Anorthosis did strike first blood early in the second half. Sekou Cisse cut inside from the left flank, hammering a fierce drive into the net. Aiming to protect their slender lead, the hosts should have doubled their money in the latter stages. Aboubacar Camara found himself 1 on 1, but he contrived to miss the target.
Anorthosis were made to pay for their profligacy. With only five minutes left, Matt Derbyshire rose highest to power a bullet header into the roof of the goal. Omonia weren’t finished there either, as Derbyshire’s head diverted Demetris Christofi’s cross beyond Ariel Harush in stoppage time.
Following this victory, Omonia stay in sixth position of the Cypriot First Division table, six points behind fourth placed Anorthosis. APOEL Nicosia lead the standings with 54 points.
