Despite OFI being favourites for the match, Panachaiki made a positive start to proceedings. Their ambition was rewarded within five minutes, as OFI goalkeeper Giorgos Strezos tripped Panagiotis Moraitis inside the arena. The referee pointed to the spot, with Giorgos Fotakis slotting the ensuing penalty kick low into the left corner. OFI put heavy pressure on Panachaiki during an intense first half, however they failed to create any real clear-cut scoring opportunities.
To OFI’s horror, Panachaiki doubled their advantage early in the second half. A powerful cross from the right flank found Dionysis Makrydimitris, who scored with a beautiful flick. Nevertheless, OFI weren’t prepared to go down without a fight. Nikolaos Kouskounas halved the deficit six minutes later, heading beyond the beaten Panachaiki netminder at point blank range. OFI pressed for a late equaliser, almost snatching a point at the death. Angelos Chanti’s looping header looked to be dipping in, but a combination of goalkeeper and crossbar came to Panachaiki’s rescue.
With this victory, Panachaiki overtake OFI to move into second spot in the Football League table, two points behind Aris Thessaloniki who have a game in hand. OFI taste defeat for the first time this season.
